what to write. what to write.

For days...maybe weeks...I've been opening this screen and then lightly drumming the keyboard for a few minutes...trying to come up with something to write.  But then something interrupts me, and I end up closing the window.  Nothing grabs my fancy as a topic. I have no kids to talk about. No puppies. No students. I do have a job, though.

In February, I took a full-time (but entry-level job) at Red Car's New York office. This is part of my change of career from theatre to producing for television.  Red Car is  an editorial (post-production) house, editing tv commercials like Verizon Fios, Mercedes, Sharpie, Betty Crocker, etc. You've probably seen the David Beckham Sharpie commercial - yeah, our editor did that. Of course, post-production is not nearly so "glamorous" as actual production, I realize. I'm not on set, shooting, being creative.  But this office is a really fun and creative place to be and for now, I'm content.  I'm even doing scratch voiceover for a Duncan Hines commercial. That just means I'm the voice for the rough cut, as they're editing it for the client to approve.

Though I don't make a whole lot of money right now (especially by New York standards), the job does have some perks:  free breakfast and lunch as well as free drinks/snacks, jeans every day, friendly people, beer on Fridays, a Wii and ping pong for taking a break, a decent commute. But most importantly, the full-floor office itself is set up to be a pleasant, relaxed environment with lots of windows, colorful walls, pleasant lighting, an open floor-plan, and scooters for a quick trip across the hard-wood floors.

Jason is still working at Broadway.com. He is less content with his environment than I am, but his job also has a one perk - free tickets. Which is helpful, because we're very poor right now.  Last night we went to "Gypsy" with Patti LuPone.  I enjoyed it much more than I expected, because it was funnier than I thought.  And Patti was great, very dynamic.  (Sorry, Amber, I know you're not a fan.)  We're trying to get tickets for something next week for our anniversary.  We'd like to see Sunday in the Park with George, but we'll probably see August Osage instead.

Anyway. That's me right now.

Next time you're drumming, I hope you'll write about your and Jason's jobs again. It's great to see little slices from everyone's lives, no matter what "box" they're in.
And I can completely picture your incredibly fun work environment. How awesome!

You mean, most important isn't "jeans every day" and a "Wii and pingpong for breaks" ???? Ha! Seriously, though, it sounds like you're enjoying yourself and what you do! So, do you and Jason drive a car? Somehow I picture the two of you walking the streets of NYC and taking public transportation and the subway and all of that...

We do have a car. But we only drive on Sundays, because the ratio of traffic to subway time is reversed - and it's faster.

@pinkshoes24 -

There's no hypothetical about it! Of course!

karen, if I were to literally take the bus to nyc sometime in the late spring/early summer, would we be able to go out for a literal frisbee throwing session?

@DougSaidWhat -

I'm gonna have to go with a literal "no," Doug. Because I'm terrible at frisbee throwing.

So, how do you do the @whoever when you want to leave a comment at both sites?

RYQ: I just re-read Dorothy Sayers essay "Lost Tools of Learning" in order to turn in an application for a Classical Latin School...and in it she describes teaching multiplication first..and that the knowledge of how numbers are grouped together will aid later on in addition and multiplication. She also said that if math is taught the other way around, it can tend to a child never liking multiplication...so, basically that's on what I'm blaming my detestation of numbers :0)

Maybe mom should have taught me doing dishes before dusting, that way I'd like to do the dishes?...Hmm.

ooh, doug, the literal no.  that's rough.

ryc: pretty much anything over a month is a record for me.  i've promised myself that if i can stay off cigs for 6 months, i'm going to italy to visit a friend of mine over there.  and as far as the weight gain goes, i did gain weight at first, but now i guess i've hit some sort of stride.

and as far as "getting back into theatre", i just took a break for a while.  i wasn't going to any auditions, and i was kind of tired of caring about it.  but that was mostly because i was dealing with some major family drama that was taking pretty much all of my attention.  so anyway, now i'm ready to start caring again.  anyway, we can discuss this more over this hypothetical drink. . .
