Or do we like the long-form of blogging that Xanga caters to? It seems that blogging has waned quite a bit. I often forget to even check.

I know that no one likes change but....just asking.

4 more years!
Last night we saw "Sunday in the Park with George."

I am not a complete fan of Sondheim's music...more like a 60% fan. Some of it I like; some I find annoying. This was the case with "Sunday." Except, the staging and projections supersede the annoying songs. It's breathtaking. Painting with projections....and it works! The middle bits were nice enough, but the beginning and the end were my favorite moments - as he begins to paint and then when the canvas returns to white. Just so lovely.

Yesterday was our anniversary. Four years. What struck me the other day was that we've lived in NY almost half our marriage....so almost the same length of time that we lived in Norfolk together. How strange.

Thought Police
I've been reading George Orwell's "1984" on my commute. I really like it. But it also seems strangely familiar....

Thursday, April 03, 2008

what to write. what to write.

For days...maybe weeks...I've been opening this screen and then lightly drumming the keyboard for a few minutes...trying to come up with something to write. But then something interrupts me, and I end up closing the window. Nothing grabs my fancy as a topic. I have no kids to talk about. No puppies. No students. I do have a job, though.

In February, I took a full-time (but entry-level job) at Red Car's New York office. This is part of my change of career from theatre to producing for television. Red Car is an editorial (post-production) house, editing tv commercials like Verizon Fios, Mercedes, Sharpie, Betty Crocker, etc. You've probably seen the David Beckham Sharpie commercial - yeah, our editor did that. Of course, post-production is not nearly so "glamorous" as actual production, I realize. I'm not on set, shooting, being creative. But this office is a really fun and creative place to be and for now, I'm content. I'm even doing scratch voiceover for a Duncan Hines commercial. That just means I'm the voice for the rough cut, as they're editing it for the client to approve.

Though I don't make a whole lot of money right now (especially by New York standards), the job does have some perks: free breakfast and lunch as well as free drinks/snacks, jeans every day, friendly people, beer on Fridays, a Wii and ping pong for taking a break, a decent commute. But most importantly, the full-floor office itself is set up to be a pleasant, relaxed environment with lots of windows, colorful walls, pleasant lighting, an open floor-plan, and scooters for a quick trip across the hard-wood floors.

Jason is still working at Broadway.com. He is less content with his environment than I am, but his job also has a one perk - free tickets. Which is helpful, because we're very poor right now. Last night we went to "Gypsy" with Patti LuPone. I enjoyed it much more than I expected, because it was funnier than I thought. And Patti was great, very dynamic. (Sorry, Amber, I know you're not a fan.) We're trying to get tickets for something next week for our anniversary. We'd like to see Sunday in the Park with George, but we'll probably see August Osage instead.

Anyway. That's me right now.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Woa. Someone's been messing with Xanga. What happened to the simplicity?

Ok, here I am.

I thought I'd post a few pictures, since I don't have much to say. Jason and I spent a lovely weekend in Florida at his parents' condo. We even spent a day at Universal. It was gorgeous. But coming home to snow was a bit harsh.

That's about it. Hope you're having a nice winter!

caucuseses...

I just finished a tasty lunch of beets and brown rice. Mmmm. Don't you just love beets? Of course you do. Who doesn't love beets?

Can we talk politics here? Will that get messy?

I'm not a particularly politically-minded person. But this year I have actually registered to vote and everything. (Unlike in 2004, when I just didn't bother and, therefore, didn't vote.) However, I was reluctant to align myself with a party on the registration card (it seemed nosy of them), and then I learned that means I can't vote in the primaries. Oops. Should have found out what "primaries" are before sending it in.

I'm trying to keep informed about the candidates.... I'm still not sure who I like best yet. I do heart Huckabee just a little, because he's the underdog. He uses less money, makes jokes, and didn't air the ads he made. I'm a sucker for the underdog. He also has a tax plan that seems feasible. On the other hand, he is a baptist....

Of all the issues, health care is at the top for me. While I support the idea of un-nationalized health care, because it's supposed to create good ol' capitalistic competition...it hasn't. Somewhere along the time line, health care became an out-of-control giant with so much money that they can pretty much buy their way out of accountability. That's the thing about big business - there are usually politicians willing to be bought by them.

My second issue is outsourcing and oil-dependence. But that's a hard one to put on just one president.

What's your biggest issue? Is it the war? Is it global warming? Let's dish.

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I know it's almost midnight, but I wanted to say a quick 'Merry Christmas' to all of you out there.

His peace be with you....

Sunday, December 23, 2007

At this time when everyone is posting lovely Christmas greetings, I just wanted to share that we saw "I am Legend" this weekend. Wow. What an experience.....

Wishing you and your loved ones the chance to see it too!
Merry Christmas to all!

Karen

reaching a boredom low

I posted this on my myspace page, because a couple of friends tagged me. And since I have nothing interesting to say here, I'm pasting it. Yep. I am that lazy. (Stop judging me.) The "assignment" was to write 10 random facts, habits, or goals about myself. This is all I came up with.

Ok....10 random things....

1. I hate escalators and revolving doors. They scare me, because they control me.

2. All my years of office work gave me carpal tunnel, and now I can't open a new jar of pickles. And I really like pickles.

3. I want to be fired from a job some day. Just so I can say, "I got fired today."

4. I have 2 sets of nearly-webbed toes and a strange birthmark that no one sees.

5. My mother used to make me wear a skirt during school hours, when I
was home-schooled. And for a while, she tried to make us leave by the
back door ("Bye, Mom!"), walk around the house, and come in the front
door ("Hello, Mrs. Hollaway!). Thank God, that didn't last long.

6. I want to go skydiving someday.

7. I walk around sewage grates, never over them. Which is really hard in this city.

8. Both Jason and I have had scarlet fever. What are the odds?

9. I get a hangover so easily, which isn't fair, because I really like to drink.

10. I usually let my cell phone go to voicemail, because I don't like chatting on the phone. It's not personal.

(Oh, and my "currently watching" was boring too.)

Friday, November 30, 2007
First off, I have to share this link to a Home Interiors gift that I would buy for each and every one of you - if I could afford it. Because it's so hilarious. I won't tell you why it's hilarious. You have to follow the link and figure it out for yourselves. Think....warm apple cider.

http://www.homeinteriors.com/sites/colivieri/productdetails?sku=77026

Other than that, not much is going on here. We are so glad the Local One Stagehands strike is over (not to be confused with the WGA strike). Broadway had been shut down for such a long time. It didn't affect me as much as it did Jason. He has a new job shooting and editing video content from Broadway.com. It's mostly boring editing, but at least he gets free tickets and to shoot interviews with interesting people.

Follow this link to watch an interview he shot at the first rehearsal for "November," the new David Mamet play, starring Nathan Lane.

http://www.broadway.com/Gen/Buzz_Video.aspx?ci=557262

As for me, in between boring temp jobs, I've been working on detoxing and switching to green and organic things. The deaths of 3 friends/family from breast cancer related problems in less than 2 years made me sit up and pay attention to my habits and environment. And I am so thankful to have a husband who cares about the Earth and supports my quest to change our entire lifestyle. We shop together for the best deals on all-natural soaps and shampoos and cleaners and groceries. If you research thoroughly, you can make the switch for not much difference in price.

I think I'm going to go buy a Christmas tree this weekend. That sounds fun.
